We read about Hender son County's proposed school merger plans. Consultants have recommended that the Hender son County commissioners fund the merged system at the same level as Hendersonville city schools. City residents have been pay ing a supplemental tax of 16.5 cents per $100. This enabled the city to chip in over $1,000 per student in local funds. The county's local contribution has been about $662 per student. Of course, the city will no longer pay a supplemental tax if the systems are merged. In addition to making up the loss of revenue from the city's sup plemental tax, the consultants recommend the county increase its local share to bring all per pupil expenditures to the city's current level. The consultant estimates a Ill-cent tax increase will be necessary. N. C. 28782 PC Democrat Women At the October meeting of the Democrat Women of Polk County Judy Arledge, Lib Cor rell and Mary Catherine Hicks gave reports of meetings attended this month. Judy told of the State Demo crat Women’s meeting in Boone where Janice Faulkner spoke as well as other important women in the party. Lib Correll attended the Breakfast at Grove Park Inn where Senator Terry Sanford spoke. He stressed the need of training people so they could get off welfare. Mary Catherine Hicks attended the Vance Aycock dinner along with 20 other Polk Democrats. Governor Bill Clin ton of Arkansas gave the address. Senator Terry Sanford announced that he will be run ning again in '92. - PC Demo crat Women Secretary. No Meeting Tuesday The Polk County American Legion Post 250 will not meet this Tuesday due to election Their regular first Tuesday meetings will resume in December. Beale Fletcher, founder of the Fletcher School of Dancing in Asheville, is the instructor. Above, Fletcher and his wife, Peggy, demonstrate the tango. In addition to this dance, class participants will learn the fox trot, rumba, swing, cha-cha, and waltz. For information on registering for the next class, call Discovery House of the Arts. 859-7691. All open burning is prohi- 20C Per 1 op' Band Students' Holiday Concert On Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. all Polk County Band stu dents will present a festive hol iday concert at the Tryon Ele mentary School auditorium. Those groups performing will be a beginner band, a middle school band, the PCHS concert band, and the PCHS chorus. A very special presentation will also be made by the PCHS col orguard. Polk Central High School band director, Keith Poole said he anticipates a very fine, exciting, and musical perfor mance from each of the per forming ensembles. We expect this to be the best band Christ mas Concert ever. The students are beginning to make prepara tions now for our programs and seem anxious to improve their musicianship and present a quality musical performance Students involved in the concert will be 6 - 12th graders from Saluda, Tryon Elementary, Green Creek, Mill Spring^ Sunny View, and Polk Central. Mrs. Barbara Poole is the ei nd . Director at Tryon and Saluda Elementary schools and D^?^ uard coor iinator for the HS colorguard. You are encouraged to mark your calendars now for this very busy season. The concert is free to the public.
